SHEILA ON 7 AT KAMA SUTRA

My assignment last Friday night was to go and watch a live band performing in Kuta. But it wasn’t until I mentioned the name – Sheila On 7 – to one of my Indonesian friends that I learned that this was one of Indonesia’s biggest, most popular and successful bands. “Where have you been for the last five years?” He asked me in disbelief! I figured I must have heard their music even if I didn’t recognise their name, and then suddenly it clicked…’Sephia’, my favourite Indonesian song of all time, I love it and I was about to go and see it performed live…
Kama Sutra proved to be a great venue for Sheila On 7. It was packed, of course, but the intimacy of the place, combined with the perfect acoustics and a catwalk that extends centrally from the main stage into the crowd, really makes the audience feel part of the performance.

Duta, Adam, Eross, Sakti and Anton treated their fans to a seriously excellent show. With a string of top hits, their popularity and success speaks for itself; but their professional delivery and outstanding talent is also immediately obvious, substantiated by the perfect timing, relaxed confidence and natural communication that is accomplished from working so closely together for eight years.

Heartthrob Duta sings from his soul; he has a rich melodious voice, blending harmoniously with the musical expertise and precise rhythm of the other members of the band. I soon realised that I recognised nearly all of the numbers that they played (and I thought I’d never heard of this band…?), the beautiful catchy tunes are the sort that stay in your head and you will find that you’re still singing them days later.

‘Dan’ and ‘Buat Aku Tersenyum’ went down a storm, and ‘Sephia’ truly made my night.
